Integrate Low Cost Flash into Embedded Systems

Released on: May 2, 2008, 9:58 am

Press Release Author: Aaron Kirchhofer / Tri-M Engineering

Industry: Computers

Press Release Summary: Designed to interface up to 2 microSD/TransFlash memory cards
to 40- or 44-pin IDE connector, SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 Adapters include card detection,
allowing different combinations without setting jumpers. Units act as true hardware
bridge, allowing microSD/TransFlash to be seen as hard drive by host computer.
Device also permits host computer to use microSD/TransFlash as bootable device.
Measuring 54.4 x 15.1 x 10.9 mm, adapter operates from -40 to +85C with +5 Vdc
supply.

Press Release Body: Port Coquitlam - April 29, 2008 - Tri-M Engineering of Port
Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada has announced its SD-IDE40 and SD-IDE44
microSD/TransFlashT to ATA Bus Adapter. The SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 is a compact board
design to interface up to two microSD/TransFlash to a 40-pin or 44-pin IDE
connector. The adapter allows for low cost, ultra-compact, removable flash storage
to be integrated into many embedded designs. TransFlash and microSD are ultra-small
(15 mm x 11 mm x 1 mm) removable flash memory cards and are currently the smallest
memory card format commercially available.. They are commonly available in
capacities ranging from 128MB to 2GB. TransFlash and microSD cards are essentially
the same, and each can be used in devices made for the other type. Common commercial
applications for TransFlash/microSD include cell phones, PDAs, and handheld GPS
devices

The SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 has two microSD/Transflash connectors with card detection
allowing different combinations (Master, Slave, Master+Slave) without setting
jumpers. The SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 acts as a true hardware bridge, allowing the
microSD/Transflash to be seen as a hard-drive by the host computer without a
software driver. It also allows the host computer to use a microSD/Transflash as a
bootable device and supports PIO1 to PIO4 and UDMA 3 for fast data transfer. The
SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 is a compact design measuring 54.4mm x 15.1mm x 10.9mm and has an
operating temperature of -40 to +85C. Single +5VDC power is supplied through the
44-pin connector or an optional AT power cable for the 40-pin version.
SD-IDE40/SD-IDE44 are available from stock with pricing starting at $19 single
quantity.

Features:

- Directly pluggable to an IDE 40 pin header. - Support up to 2 TransFlash/microSD
(Master/Slave).
- Hardware bridging between IDE and - Support TransFlash/microSD up to 1G.
Transflash/microSD. - Support TransFlash/microSD 1bit and 4bit modes.
- OS installable to TransFlash/microSD.
- Bootable from TransFlash/microSD.
- Support PIO 0-4 and Ultra DMA 3 mode.
